Engineering a New Era: Women, Leadership, and Sustainable Business

Tate Engineering Inc., founded by Roxanne Tate (MASc., FEC, P.Eng., CEM, GGP), offers energy, project, and construction management consulting with a strong focus on sustainability and client partnership. At its core, the firm is not just about building infrastructure—it’s about building better ways of doing business.

“Our energy consulting services are in place to help our clients navigate the complexities of reducing operating costs, reaching net zero emissions and supporting their Environmental and Social Governance goals. Our project and construction management services are for clients who have a vision of a new development or major renovation. We work with them from initial concept, by defining the scope, budget and schedule, selecting the design team, meeting regulatory requirements, securing financing, and navigating the complexities of construction and their transition into a new space.”

“When I was growing up, I didn’t have much exposure to higher education. I knew I needed to work hard, break a few cycles, and get to university. Engineering was my top choice because I was strong in STEM and there was a defined career path. Over the past 20+ years I have worked in fields spanning research & development, manufacturing, and energy consulting. It wasn’t until I was expecting my third child, that starting a business first crossed my mind and I haven’t looked back! For me, starting my company gave me the ideal opportunity to balance my career with family life, emphasizing flexibility, balance, and meaningful work.”

For those considering entrepreneurship, Roxanne’s advice is grounded in authenticity: “Be clear on your values from day one.” She emphasizes that values-based decision-making is vital for building a business that’s not only successful but sustainable. “You’ll face tough choices—what projects to take, who to hire—and your values will be your guidepost.”

Persistence and resilience, she adds, are indispensable. “Starting and growing a successful business is not an easy task. There are no shortcuts. You must be ready to weather the challenges.”

In an industry where women make up just over 15% of the workforce, standing out is inevitable—but fitting in can be harder. “Confidence and competence are key,” Roxanne says. “Ultimately, your work should speak for itself. I’ve found that building a strong network and seeking mentorship from experienced professionals provides guidance and opens doors to new opportunities. I have always been actively involved with industry organizations.”

She encourages other women pursuing engineering or entrepreneurship to seek mentorship, build networks, and stay engaged in professional organizations. “Volunteering has allowed me to help shape the profession and position myself as a leader who’s invested in its future.”

One of the consistent sources of support throughout Roxanne’s journey has been the Centre for Women in Business (CWB). “The support I’ve received from the CWB is immeasurable,” she says.

“In the early days, I took advantage of learning opportunities to build my skillset in business management. The CWB offered structured learning programs in financial management and marketing along with the Power Lunch series that enabled varied learning and networking opportunities that fit my business needs. As my business has grown, the programs and opportunities available through the CWB remain aligned with my needs. I have been fortunate to participate in both the Advanced Management & Mentoring and Greater Heights of Growth programs. As a newly Certified Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) I am currently participating in the Supplier Diversity Mentorship program!”

With the firm’s first five-year strategic plan nearly complete, Tate Engineering is setting bold goals for the future—doubling revenue while maintaining a well-connected, aligned, and agile team. Key to this growth will be a comprehensive quality management system and a refreshed brand strategy aimed at reinforcing team cohesion and how they work together.

“Our focus is on delivering consistent, predictable, and reliable results,” Roxanne says. “That’s how we’ll continue to grow—by staying true to who we are.”

Reflecting on her journey, she highlights one lesson above all: “Build your network. Entrepreneurship can be lonely—especially in the early days. Having a community of mentors and peers makes all the difference. Organizations like the CWB help in building the community women business leaders need to thrive.”

In a world increasingly focused on sustainable solutions and inclusive leadership, Tate Engineering Inc. is showing that technical excellence and human-centered values are not just compatible—they’re the future of the industry.
