Bilingual Women Leading the Way in Entrepreneurship: Opportunities and Advantages

 (*This event will be held in French with the option of simultaneous English translation available)

Atlantic Canadian Women in Growth Partnership (ACWGP) is thrilled to introduce the next Atlantic Women’s Business Series.

This webinar series features interviews with distinguished women entrepreneurs from Atlantic Canada who will share their personal journey: how they got started in business, what obstacles they encountered, what they learned along the way, from whom they got the support and advice they would give to new businesses and those ready to expand.

2021 Theme: Leading Change

The challenges of past year have clearly highlighted and reinforced the importance of supporting women’s entrepreneurship, as the global economy tries to recalibrate, “build back better” and recover from COVID-19.

While all entrepreneurs face challenges, women entrepreneurs need to break even more barriers due to an unequal system. Gender inequality is a global issue. Today, only one in three businesses are owned by women (The World Bank Gender Data Portal, 2020). Empowering women drives inclusive economic growth. According to the International Monetary Fund, 90 percent of income made by female entrepreneurs is distributed to their families and communities.

According to Women in the Digital Age, “during an experiment in which two entrepreneurial pitch videos with randomly assigned voices were watched, 68.3 percent of participants preferred to invest in ventures pitched by a male voice even though these voices presented identical pitches.” Additionally, YouGov’s 2016 survey found that 13 percent of 16-22 year old women with an idea for a startup said a lack of role models is a barrier to setting up a business, compared to only 7 percent of young men. It is clear that women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to success.

Now is the time to focus on women’s entrepreneurship to discover and uncover ways to support  these entrepreneurs and strengthen the social fabric of our communities.

Goals for Women in Business 2021

We hope all Women in Business attendees leave with new tools to empower them to lead change in the world of small business and entrepreneurship.

Some specific goals for the day include:

facilitating new mentoring and mutually supportive relationships
co-creating new language that includes and welcomes
identifying specific tactics for women in small business and entrepreneurship to overcome invisible barriers
learning ways to use the tools of the industry to increase corporate social responsibility.

Atlantic Women’s Business Series
The Atlantic Women’s Business Series features interviews with entrepreneur women leaders from Atlantic Canada who will share their personal stories – how they started, what barriers they faced, what they’ve learned along the way, who supported them, and their best advice for new start-ups and businesses ready to grow.

Nominees in all categories may be self-nominated, nominated by industry colleagues or nominated by their employers or organizations.

All nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee made up of Nova Scotia tech sector leaders. The winners will be announced at the 2021 Digital Diversity Awards ceremony during the Centre for Women in Business’ INNOVATE event in October 2021.

“Up to Speed” is a series of five half-day digital workshops that give you and your business the tools to understand digital marketing best practices and techniques. By the end of the series, your business is “Up to Speed,” helping you either enhance or launch your online presence.

This is more than a series of workshops – this program offers Q&A and mentoring sessions with the experts from Revolve, so you can get help on your specific digital needs. Connect for a few minutes to ask questions on doing business with the Government of Canada or stay for the full session. Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Learn about tools and resources, including how to navigate the tenders page on www.BuyAndSell.gc.ca
• Pick up tips on finding opportunities, bidding best practices, and more.

The Government of Canada purchases over $20 billion of goods and services each year. This session will provide you with key information about how to sell to the Government of Canada that will help you learn how to:

• Find out whether the Government of Canada buys your goods or service
• Understand the contracting process including Invitations to Tender, Requests for Proposals, Standing Offers and Supply Arrangements
• Take advantage of the procurement information on Buyandsell.gc.ca
• Register in supplier databases
• Sell professional services to the Government of Canada including the procurement tools a Government of Canada buyer may use for professional services (ProServices, Task and Solutions Professional Services (TSPS), Task and Solutions-Based Informatics Professional Services (TBIPS/SBIPS), etc.)

• Small Business of the Year – total number of employees not exceeded 25 and in operation a minimum of two years as of August 31, 2021

• Innovative Business of the Year – must have introduced an innovative product or service on or before August 31, 2021
• Not-for-Profit Business of the Year – originality and sustainability in generating income, achieving business objectives, measurable results in communities, commitment to people development, accountable governance
