Laurie Cook has over 20 years experience in adult education, non-profit management, strategic planning, and community development. Recently, she did a Masters degree in Adult Education and Community Development and then joined the city of Halifax as a Community Developer with Volunteer Services. Since then, she has also been a Regional Convenor for the Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia.
Laurie began life as a community organizer when she moved to Musquodoboit Harbour – a small village just east of Halifax. She fell in love with the countryside and the area’s potential. She was soon involved with the local community association, and then also chaired and facilitated the community’s first visioning initiative.
During the community visioning process, many people were concerned the vision would just be another planning document that would just sit on a shelf somewhere and collect dust. As Chair of the process, Laurie took that concern to heart and since the consultation phase finished, she has worked consistently to turn those same ideas into action. This included becoming involved as co-founder of several community organizations including the Old School Community Gathering Place, MusGo Rider, Eastern Shore Mental Health and the Eastern Shore Women’s Network.
Laurie also has an honours degree in journalism from the University of King’s College, and certificates in Adult Education, Advanced Facilitation and Non-Profit Leadership from Dalhousie University. She is also a graduate of Envision Halifax’s Community Leadership program that was co-developed by the Shambhala Institute and the Halifax Metro United Way.
Laurie’s latest social enterprise adventure is looking at ways to create a Social Innovation Park in the heart of Musquodoboit Harbour that would include affordable, supportive housing for people on lower incomes, employment for people with challenges attaching to the labour market (people with disabilities, youth…), a conference centre, campground and more. The idea is to help people work where they live, and live where they work. The entire concept would also be a environmental showcase that would encourage people to make greater use of environmental technology in their everyday lives.
I am Meryl Cook, author, speaker, artist & cancer survivor.
I’m a former homeopath. Now I design hand hooked healing mats to engage your creativity and propel you on your healing journey.
Having worked as a health professional for 20 years, it wasn’t until I faced my own health crisis that I understood what it truly takes to heal at a bone deep level. During my recovery from breast cancer I designed and hooked a series of healing mats and wrote the book One Loop at a Time, a story of rug hooking, healing and creativity. I teach workshops called Hook a Healing Mat. I also do private wellness coaching with women to tell their stories of their journey from wake up call to wellness, using writing and rug hooking as my medium.
I am available to speak about From Wakeup Call to Wellness – how one woman’s health wake up call propelled her on a creative journey to find and heal herself.
