Meet CWB’s Advisory Board members

 

Chair: Dr. Sandi Findlay-Thompson, Mount Saint Vincent University

Sandi is a tenured Assistant Professor in the Department of Business and Tourism at Mount Saint Vincent University. She holds a PhD from Northcentral University, an MBA from Dalhousie, and a BBA from MSVU. Sandi's research interests include workplace learning, gender and entrepreneurship and managerial competencies specifically in the non-profit and technology sectors. Prior to her career at the Mount, Sandi spent 25 years in industry holding management positions with , Marex, Central Guarantee Trust Company and TD Canada Trust in the areas of marketing, operations, administration, sales and investments.

 

Carly Campbell, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Carly is the Provincial Coordinator of the Women in Business Initiative for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). She joined ACOA in 1988 and has held a variety of positions within the Agency such as communications, intergovernmental relations, economic development and program development and delivery. Carly holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Saint Vincent University and a Masters in Public Administration from Dalhousie University.

 

Dr. Mallika Das, Mount Saint Vincent University

Since beginning to teach at the Mount in 1982, Mallika has had many opportunities to develop herself as a professor and a researcher. She currently teaches managing diversity, marketing research, marketing strategy and consumer behaviour, as well as in the Management Development Program for Women. She has written more than 60 articles, papers and cases in areas such managing diversity, women and entrepreneurship, services marketing and cross-cultural issues in marketing. She has also worked on several student and company projects on a variety of topics, including location studies and customer satisfaction surveys for various organizations. She has been actively involved with the distance education program at the Mount. She proposed and developed Women in Management and Managing Diversity courses at the Mount and has taught the Managing Diversity course on campus and through the Mount’s distance education program.

 

 

Faith Drinnan, the Oyster Group

In 1992, Faith Drinnan began her business alone at her kitchen table. Today, the Oyster Group employs eight women and has offices in Dartmouth, N.S., and Portland, Maine. The Oyster Group has clients throughout Canada and the United States servicing 13 magazines and over 50 books. Faith has won the Nova Scotia Business Inc. Edge Award and was a regional finalist in the Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. She is on the faculty of Magazines Canada School for Circulation and on the Board of the Centre for Women in Business.

 

Lisa Drader-Murphy, Turbine Clothing Company

A 2005 Progress Club Women of Excellence award winner in the category of innovator/ entrepreneur, Lisa Drader-Murphy has been a designer for the garment design and manufacturing industry for 18 years. After graduating in 1990 from Form & Function Design Academy in Calgary at the top of her class, Lisa went on to design numerous products for a variety of sectors, including technical industrial wear, ladies ready-to-wear, active wear, and children’s clothing and has contributed to the wardrobe for a number of film and television productions. Since establishing Turbine in 1997, her business has garnered national buzz. Turbine offers a fashion and accessory collection, website, retail showroom, production operation, café, private fine dining, and catering and workshop services. Lisa’s utilization of vintage materials decreases raw material production equaling sustainability and an eco-conscious undercurrent to exceptional design.

 

 

Dawn Emson, The Naughty Cookie Co.

Dawn and her husband moved their family to Nova Scotia in 2004 and haven’t looked back. Dawn has found some pretty amazing and supportive people here, that showed in her confidence to start her passion and dream of The Naughty Cookie Co. Dawn started taking part-time distance classes towards her degree in Business at the Mount in 2005. In 2008, with the support of family, friends and one of her MSVU professors, this mother of four, confidently launched 3 of her flavours as a small home-based business she calls The Naughty Cookie Co. Dawn’s company has continued to grow ever since.

 

Deborah A. Symonds, Manager, Marketplace Services - Atlantic Region, Deloitte

Experienced in marketing and communications, Debbie has a track record of delivering consistent, high-quality results at Deloitte. Debbie manages a team of four in Deloitte offices located in Halifax, Saint John and St. John’s, each office with its own unique culture, demographics and market needs. She has over 29 years of experience working with the various stakeholders of the organization in multiple industries. Debbie is a passionate and energetic leader who strongly supports and participates in Deloitte events including, but not limited to, those which support women and enable them to become more successful, flexible and respected.

 

 

Dr. Kim Kienapple, Mount Saint Vincent University

Kim joined Mount Saint Vincent University in July, 1984 in the Department of Child and Youth Study after receiving a Master of Arts and PhD from Purdue University in Child Development. Throughout his time at the Mount, he has served three terms as department chair, has been a member of Senate and many Senate committees. Since 2001, he has been a co-director of the Centre of Excellence for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs. This nation-wide research and education consortium provides a range of services including policy advice to governments, collaborative research projects and practical advice to professionals and parents. He has been the board chairperson for a number of regional child care centres and educational institutions and was also the President of the Canadian Association for Teacher Education. Locally, he has been an active volunteer with many child and youth serving organizations.

 

Shelley LeBrun, TD Canada Trust

Throughout her 21 years with TD Canada Trust, Shelley LeBrun has held a variety of diverse positions, the last 12 in the business banking services. In her current role as Area Manager, Business Banking for Nova Scotia, Shelley leads a team of small business advisors who understand the needs of and provide sound advice to the small business customer. She is also responsible for providing education, training and sales support to employees, and represents TD Canada Trust in the business banking market place. Shelley holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Saint Mary’s University. In addition to her role at TD Canada Trust, Shelley is also the current president of the Halifax Cornwallis Progress Club.
