Taking Your Business to the Next Level? Think About Going Green

Holly BondWherever you are in the business journey—whether you’re a new business that’s just opened its doors, or a thriving organization that’s been around for years—it’s never too early or late to begin thinking about a sustainability strategy.

Not only can green initiatives help reduce your impact on the planet (and often reduce your energy bills), they can strengthen your relationship with customers, and position your business as a leader in the community.

Many people simply don’t know where to start or, if they have a plan up and running, don’t know how to take their strategy to the next level. Let me help.

If you’re just starting out, a good place to begin is simply by taking a baseline of your current energy use—a line in the sand, so to speak, by which you can measure future progress once you begin to take action. Once you know your baseline, start by conserving energy. It’s that simple! Examples can include:

• Installing motion sensors that will turn off the lights when rooms are not in use (alternatively, you can encourage employees to turn off the lights when leaving rooms)

• Switching to energy-efficient LED bulbs

• Switching to energy-efficient appliances when regular appliances need to be replaced

These are just ideas to get you started. There are many resources online to help you find ways to incorporate conservation throughout your office.

A practical next step on the journey is to green those things you cannot conserve. For example, if you are hosting a lunch for your staff, source the meal from local suppliers. Or, encourage more sustainable transportation at your business by incentivizing your employees to bike, walk or take public transit to work instead of driving.

Did you know that another element of your business you can green is your energy?

My organization, Bullfrog Power, makes it easy for all businesses to choose green electricity, green natural gas or green fuel.

Bullfrog Power is Canada’s leading green energy provider. When you sign up for Bullfrog’s green electricity, for example, we ensure the power going into the grid for your company is coming from clean, green sources like wind and water. You eliminate your electricity-related emissions footprint.

We also use your support to fund community-based green energy projects across the country—such as solar projects on schools and community centres and renewable projects with First Nations groups. No changes are needed to your building to get started—and even if you are a home-based business or in a leased spaced you can be 'bullfrogpowered.'

We also help you communicate your green energy purchase to all of your different stakeholders. We can supply press releases, social media text, decals, newsletter articles and more to help you get the word out about your commitment to operating more sustainably.

Increasingly, research is showing that consumers want to support sustainable businesses. Hopefully, I’ve provided some tips that will get you started on the path toward a greener business. Start taking action for the environment today—I think you’ll find it can be done easily and will make a big difference. And feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
